The biometric cameras work by scanning the faces of shoppers so they can be checked against a database of suspected criminals. But they have been branded'Orwellian' and'unlawful' by critics, who claim that staff could add people to a secret'blacklist' without them knowing. The District has partnered with company BusPatrol to put cameras on five school buses to deter drivers from speeding past buses when their stop-arm is out, which is a violation of law. "We use an AI engine named Ava to be able to automatically detect vehicles that illegally pass stopped school buses," BusPatrol CEO Jean Souliere said. Souliere said the cameras on the side of the buses take pictures of the license plates of cars that keep driving.

Ottapalam: Kerala Police is gearing up to face the manifold challenges on the law and order front. Amid move to widely install cameras with Artificial Intelligence in public places, first police vehicle in Palakkad district with surveillance cameras has been readied here. Four surveillance cameras have been fitted on to the official vehicle of the circle inspector at the Ottapalam police station. The cameras mounted on the top of the vehicle are aimed at capturing images that could help in maintaining law and order, and stop traffic law violations.
